The primary focus of your role will be to help grow and scale the core Bitbucket engineering teams, ensure commitments stay on track, remove any roadblocks, and facilitate fast execution and timely decision-making. In addition, you will manage managers and ensure their growth and success. You will also collaborate across Atlassian to ensure project dependencies and deliveries are handled well. We would love for you to have experience running highly effective development teams, able to manage both managers and engineers, along with an extensive background in distributed systems and web-scale software. This role will also benefit from a deep understanding of the latest build, test, performance test, deployment, and configuration tools. Bonus points for real-world Agile experience (and the scars to prove it). Traits that will serve you well in this role include being passionate about the customer experience, ready and willing to ask the tough questions, a natural at working cross-functionally, and rock solid in both your written and verbal communication skills (public speaking and debating ideas with developers and non-technical people is a given).

The Role:

    • Managing the Bitbucket Enterprise Experience engineering teams that build and maintain Bitbucket’s most foundational systems. This group is tasked with helping Bitbucket scale to meet the needs of enterprise customers.
    • This is a manager-of-managers role overseeing of an organization of roughly 40 engineers (5 frontline teams).
    • Driving excellence in security, reliability, and operational health across Bitbucket engineering, maintaining a culture of rapid turn-around of security fixes, and dedication to hitting 99.99%+ uptime.
    • Guiding your teams in understanding the right metrics to track and improve.
    • Mentoring, empowering, and inspiring the managers who report to you. At Bitbucket, our engineering leaders put our team members first, providing the right support for them to lead projects on autonomous, nimble teams.
    • Enabling our cross-functional product teams to ship features quickly and safely as our team grows in size, providing them with the tooling and processes needed for success.
    • Leading with integrity and inspiration, by drawing from past experiences within large-scale complex systems, cloud companies, and/or product experience with complex enterprise software.

On your first day we’ll expect you to have:

    • 5+ years of experience managing high-performing engineering teams. Experience managing remote employees.
    • Exceptional interpersonal skills: written and verbal, in person and remote. You have the ability to build strong partnerships at all levels of our team, and have proven leadership skills in listening, influencing, and coordinating.
    • A passion for understanding customers and their needs. Empathizing with our customers is crucial in order to build the right set of reliability practices at Bitbucket.
    • Experience setting a high bar for operational excellence across an engineering team, and putting systems in place to measure against that bar.
    • Proven technical background and acumen stemming from deep understanding and experience across complex products and systems. Deep understanding of application security, web applications, and modern techniques for building software. Understanding of the latest build, test, deployment, and configuration tools. Real-world experience building high-performance, large-scale systems.
    • An understanding of security and privacy standards (e.g. SOC2, GDPR).
