The Senior Tax Accountant is responsible for indirect tax including U.S. sales & use and property tax calculations and compliance, escheatment reporting and compliance, Canadian transaction tax compliance, assisting with tax audits, preparing tax account reconciliations, and tax research. Assist with technical tax projects including tax engine maintenance. This role will be based in San Antonio, TX and will return to our office in 2022.
Knowledge/Skills/Ability
- Working knowledge of general sales, use, and property tax provisions (not state-specific provisions).
- Working knowledge of Canadian GST/HST, QST, and PST is preferred.
- Knowledge of tax provisions as they apply to online services a plus.
- Knowledge of tax and accounting calculations and preparing supporting work papers.
- General knowledge of SEC and IRS reporting requirements.
- Ability to work under minimal supervision, independently and/or as a member of a project team.
- Ability to conduct tax technical research and analysis in order to provide a recommended solution.
- Must be detailed oriented – with strong attention to accuracy and problem-solving. “Following-up until resolved” skills are a must.
- Excellent computer skills. Skills in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) are a must. Experience with Oracle, Vertex, and Avalara preferred.
- A strong ability to communicate information and ideas both verbally and written so others can easily comprehend communication.
- Ability to successfully work with other departments in the company.
- Excellent time management, communication, and organizational skills.
- Must be able to adapt quickly to change.
- Ability to provide FANATICAL support.
Job Complexity
- Review sales & use and property tax calculations and coordinate with external tax advisors.
- Investigates and prepares responses to notices and inquiries from various taxing authorities.
- Perform tax research and analysis in order to provide a recommended solution and prepare written documentation to support tax positions taken.
- Assist with tax audits as needed including interfacing with state revenue agencies and external advisors to resolve tax controversies.
- Assist with the determination of the taxability of new products and services as needed.
- Review calculations for journal entry postings and perform account reconciliations.
- Ongoing development of technical knowledge of applicable tax laws and regulations.
Experience and Education
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or related discipline required.
- Master's degree preferred.
- Typically, 5+ years of professional accounting with emphasis in indirect tax.
- ERP experience strongly preferred.
- Experience in Public Accounting, Big 4 and Corporate Accounting preferred.
- CPA/CMI preferred.
