Working at AtlassianAtlassian can hire people in any country where we have a legal entity. Assuming you have eligible working rights and a sufficient time zone overlap with your team, you can choose to work remotely or return to an office as they reopen (unless it’s necessary for your role to be performed in the office). Interviews and onboarding are conducted virtually, a part of being a distributed-first company. Our Tenant Metadata team's back-end platform microservices are the fast, high-reliability master data store for the Tenant Platform - the "glue" data for multi-tenancy in all of Atlassian product and platform, involved in shard routing, product state, runtime resource access, data migration and more, among the most important systems in the company. Our systems distribute this data to Atlassian cloud and product systems in all regions for use in every web request to Atlassian products, and must serve 40 billion client requests per day at very high reliability. To do that we've built a novel, layered distributed cache, a CQRS architecture serving hundreds of teams in the company, and it's worked so well we're working on expanding it to more use cases! Meanwhile, our growth and new products bring big scale challenges our way, and many more internal consumers.Sounds like interesting technology? You can read more in these blogs about our story so far - your new team wrote these and owns this system at the forefront of Atlassian engineering and scale challenges:https://www.atlassian.com/engineering/atlassian-critical-services-above-six-nines-of-availabilityhttps://www.atlassian.com/blog/technology/aws-scaling-multi-region-low-latency-servicehttps://www.atlassian.com/engineering/how-we-build-data-residency-for-atlassian-cloudWe're hiring a Principal Engineer reporting to Senior Engineering Manager, Tenant Platform - a role with both architecture and development aspects. You'll bring technical depth in designing and scaling platform systems. As we split and grow our existing teams and go deeper on future challenges, you'll work on architecture and platform technical strategy, partnering with product managers, engineering managers, and several teams of engineers. You'll help scale and platformise these services to support more customers, more products and more engineering teams consuming them, at different scales and traffic patterns. We're designing a self-service adoption, integration and testing story as part of wider Tenant Platform, and working out data models and schema evolution that can be maintained across multiple teams. We are part of the Tenant Platform team, which is core to allowing the concept of multi-tenancy in our cloud architecture. We provide a platform used by all of Atlassian's products which enables concepts such as the creation of new tenancy at signup, management of the tenant lifecycle (licence changes, product suspension, deletion), shard allocation and routing, and data residency. We'd love you to bring new ideas to our engineering culture, and besides our awesome group of collaborating teams, you'll get to work with a huge variety of other teams across Atlassian, as our services have a lot of internal customers.

What you'll do

    • Design and evolve reliable low-latency platform components, cache layers and data pipelines
    • Define long-term vision working with teams to turn the vision into a roadmap
    • Mentor and lead other engineers
    • Partner with other technical leads, product and engineering managers
    • Sustain operational quality for your team's important services - we run our systems in production!

Your background

    • Indepth technical experience building backend systems
    • You've built and operated scalable, performant, reliable systems
    • Architecture skills spanning multiple systems, distributed systems concepts like scaling, consistency and availability tradeoffs. You see the interactions between technical decisions, people and processes on a long timescale. You can apply platform thinking to focus on efficient usability by our internal customers, and how we can support many more consumers.
    • AWS knowledge (Dynamo, SQS/SNS, S3) or similar experience with other public cloud offerings (e.g. Google, Azure)
    • We use Java and Spring microservices, we'll expect you to coach developers on these, but specific language experience is not a prerequisite
    • Planned and estimated multi-quarter projects, so you can coach your teams on this
