Interviews and onboarding are conducted virtually, a part of being a distributed-first company.With a sufficient timezone overlap with the team, we're able to hire eligible candidates for this role from any location in Australia and New Zealand.Your future teamIn this role as a Principal Cost Engineer, reporting into the Engineering Manager - FinOps, you'll be an important part of our cost efficiency strategy across Atlassian. As a member of our Industry-leading Cloud FinOps team, part of our Engineering Excellence department, you'll be a trusted partner and technical expert for cost reduction within our area of expertise. Specifically you'll be partnering with our Data teams across Atlassian.It's your job to ensure to bring visibility to costs, and the opportunities to build efficiencies within your domain.

What you'll do

    • Regularly tackle large and complex problems with an aim to improve cost efficiency and visibility in your domain.
    • Deliver solutions that are used by other teams and products
    • Determine plans-of-attack on large projects
    • Routinely tackle complex architecture challenges and apply architectural standards and start using them on new projects
    • Partner across multiple engineering teams to drive best practices with regards to architectural and system design patterns that reduce cost to serve. and enable efficient use of our services.
    • Transfer your depth of knowledge from your current language to excel as a Software Engineer
    • Influence and partner with other senior leaders in your domain.

Your background

    • 10+ years experience in multiple hands-on software/technology leadership roles, with end-to-end responsibility through the software development lifecycle
    • 4+ years experience with public cloud (preferably AWS) and SaaS \ PaaS tooling.
    • Bachelor's or Master's degree with a preference for Computer Science degree
    • Knowledge to evaluate trade-offs between correctness, robustness, performance, space and time
    • Practice in mentoring other engineers and influencing decision makers throughout the organization
    • Considers the customer impact when making technical decisions

It's great but not required if you have

    • A background in FinOps or Finance.
    • Data Analysis and Data Engineer experience.
