Linux System Engineer - I (DNS)

JOB TITLE: Linux Systems Engineer I (DNS)FLSA STATUS: Exempt PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY:  Perform ongoing daily tasks related to the DNS server infrastructure.  Monitor the health of the infrastructure and respond to alerts when necessary. Answer general questions about DNS, NTP, and related services from internal and external customers. Assist in new server or datacenter deployments. Aid in crafting and maintaining accurate documentation. Assist in ensuring all systems meet compliance metrics.Act as the on-call engineer one week per month. KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITY:  . Basic to intermediate knowledge of: OSs and distributions, patching, monitoring, RAID, security, web servers, cluster management, high availability, root cause analysis, systems optimization, configuration and source code management, database administration, scripting language, auth/directory services, backups, caching, SSL certificates, storage, packet analysis, DNS , HTTP, FTP, SNMP, SSH, hardware, virtualization, networking, firewalls, load balancing, troubleshooting, stack trace analysis, methodologies of design and implementation.Able to resolve problems in a timely manner. Understand automation principles and design.  Demonstrate ability to learn and adapt to Rackspace specific tools. Seeks out guidance and knowledge.  Understanding and knowledge of adjacent roles. KEY REQUIREMENTS: Fundamental understanding of the Linux operating system, including command line tools, utilities, and shell scripting. Fundamental understanding of the Domain Name System (DNS) and understanding of the Network Time Protocol (NTP).  Strong understanding of networking, including CIDR, IP routing, routers, switches, VLAN's, etc. Experience with the BIND DNS server software package JOB COMPLEXITY: Responsible for implementation of basic architectural design of hardware, software and/or networking systems. Analyzes systems and determines business requirements. Ensures completeness and compatibility of the technical infrastructure to support system performance. Keeps informed of new technology. Follow and execute Rackspace change management. Contribute and organize central store of knowledge. Attend interdepartmental meetingsEXPERIENCE WITH THE FOLLOWING IS PREFERRED:Debian LinuxNagios, cacti, Splunk, Ansible, syslog-ngSoftware Defined Networking (eg: quagga, frr)Advanced networking routing protocols such as BGP and OSPF.Dell DRAC and HP iLOSUPERVISION: Operates under general supervision.EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION:5+ years experience as a Linux systems administrator or engineer. Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field preferred. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: General office environment.
